Lester Dominates As Red Sox Take Game 1

Sep 15, 2014 10:57 PM

Jon Lester silenced the St. Louis Cardinals with seven-plus innings of shutout baseball as the Boston Red Sox took Game 1 of the World Series 8-1 on Wednesday night.

Lester allowed just five hits and struck out eight batters in 7 2/3 innings of work. He threw 112 pitches and walked a single batter.

He was taken to a local hospital for testing.

Matt Holliday put St. Louis on the board in the top of the ninth with a solo home run to center field.

Game 2 will take place on Thursday night at Fenway Park.

The Cardinals committed an uncharacteristic three errors. The Red Sox got to Adam Wainwright early. The right-hander threw 95 pitches, but lasted just five innings. He was charged with three earned runs (five scored). He struck out four and walked one.

World Series Features Regular Season Champs For First Time Since 1999

Oct 31, 2014 3:03 PM

The Boston Red Sox and St. Louis Cardinals had the best regular season record in their respective leagues at 97-65.

The World Series hasn't had a matchup of regular season champs since the 1999 season.

The World Series added an extra round in 1969 as previous matchups were determined strictly by regular season records.

The 2004 Cardinals are the only National League team to advance to the World Series with the best regular season record since 1999.

Dec 2, 2014 10:42 PM

David Ortiz hit a dramatic game-tying grand slam in the eighth inning of Game 2 against the Detroit Tigers on Saturday night, setting the stage for a walk-off win in the ninth.

Ortiz is the first to hit a game-tying grand slam in the playoffs since Vladimir Guerrero did so in 2004. Ron Cey was the first to accomplish the feat, hitting one for the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1977.

"That's what he does. He's an amazing hitter," Max Scherzer said of Ortiz. "He's an amazing postseason hitter. He's clutch. Any given moment, a swing of the bat he can always take you deep."
