Mike Trout Optimistic He's 'Going To Play Here Soon'

Jul 31, 2022 5:23 PM

In the span of four days, Mike Trout went from his career in peril to possibly picking a bat by the end of next week.

The Angels star visited Thursday with Dr. Robert Watkins, a back specialist and co-director of the Marina Spine Clinic in Los Angeles. Trout is slated to begin rotational exercises Wednesday and could return to swinging a bat shortly after that.

"It went from my career is over to now hopefully I'm going to play here soon," Trout said with a laugh. "Coming out of the workouts, it's been great every day. It's getting better. It's very promising to start rotational stuff. I'll do that for a couple days in the weight room and if that goes well, I'll start swinging."

Jul 31, 2022 5:16 PM

The San Francisco Giants placed shortstop Thairo Estrada on the 7-day concussion IL on Sunday while also trading for Chicago Cubs minor league shortstop Dixon Machado.

Estrada, 26, was hit in the helmet by a pitch from Mark Leiter Jr. in the fifth inning of Saturday's win by the Giants and had to be helped off the field. With Brandon Crawford out of the lineup with a knee injury, the Giants were in need of a shortstop.

Machado, 30, was hitting .312 with a .402 on-base percentage for Triple-A Iowa and will start for the Giants against the Cubs on Sunday night.

Mariners standout rookie Julio Rodríguez is headed to the injured list with a right wrist injury, manager Scott Servais said on Sunday.

X-rays were negative after Rodríguez was hit by a pitch in the eighth inning of Saturday's game, but continued swelling and weakness in Rodríguez's wrist will prevent him from swinging a bat for at least five days.

Trevor Story Has Hairline Fracture In Right Wrist

Jul 30, 2022 5:08 PM

Red Sox second baseman Trevor Story now knows why his right hand hadn’t been recovering like he had hoped from the deep bruise he sustained on July 12 when he was hit by a pitch while in the middle of swinging.

A follow-up exam with a hand specialist on Friday revealed that Story has a hairline fracture in his right wrist. Alex Cora said the fracture is in a different spot from where Story was hit by Tampa Bay’s Corey Kluber.

Before the latest diagnosis, the club was holding out hope that Story could be back in a matter of days, perhaps at some point next week. Now, he won’t swing a bat for at least 10 days, clouding the timeline of when he will be able to return to action.

Spencer Turnbull Not Expected To Return In 2022

Jul 28, 2022 9:15 AM

Spencer Turnbull is unlikely to make it back to the Detroit Tigers this season.

The right-hander has spent the entire season on the injured list while rehabbing from Tommy John surgery.

Turnbull hasn't experienced any setbacks, but the Tigers would need an "aggressive" timeline to get him back on the mound for a couple late-September starts, A.J. Hinch told reporters.

The 29-year-old had a 2.88 ERA in nine starts for Detroit last season before he got injured.

Mike Trout Downplays Back Issue: 'My Career Is Not Over'

Jul 28, 2022 9:10 AM

Mike Trout is downplaying news that he's dealing with a "rare" spinal condition that could affect him for the rest of his career.

The Los Angeles Angels' head athletic trainer revealed the condition Wednesday.

"I think he meant that I have to stay on top of the routine I do on a daily basis to keep it from coming back," Trout said.

"I'm appreciative of all the prayer requests, but my career is not over."

Trout left a game on July 12 with what was first called back spasms, then went on the injured list a week later with what was called rib cage inflammation.

"This is a pretty rare condition that he has right now in his back," trainer Mike Frostad said. "The doctor (Robert Watkins III), who is one of the most well-known spine surgeons in the country -- if not the world -- doesn't see a lot of these.

"And for it to happen in a baseball player -- we just have to take into consideration what he puts himself through with hitting, swinging on a daily basis just to get prepared, and then also playing in the outfield, diving for balls, jumping into the wall -- things like that. There's so many things that can aggravate it. But this doctor hasn't seen a lot of it."

Jacob deGrom Could Return To Mets Next Week

Jul 28, 2022 9:05 AM

Jacob deGrom pitched four innings for Triple-A Syracuse Wednesday in what's expected to be his last minor league rehab outing before rejoining the New York Mets' rotation.

"The plan right now, if everything progresses well, is to pitch for us next time," Buck Showalter said. "But that could change by what we hear [Thursday] or the next day."

The two-time Cy Young winner would likely return to the Mets early next week in Washington.

Mike Trout said he appreciated all the support he received Wednesday after the Los Angeles Angels' head athletic trainer revealed the three-time American League MVP had a "rare" spinal condition that could affect him for the rest of his career.

Even if Trout thought the whole thing was blown out of proportion.

"I think he meant that I have to stay on top of the routine I do on a daily basis to keep it from coming back," Trout said after watching his Angels beat the Kansas City Royals 4-0 to clinch their first series win in nearly a month.
