Cardinals Lose Miles Mikolas For Season

Jul 29, 2020 8:53 AM

Miles Mikolas will have season-ending surgery to repair a tendon in his strained right forearm.

The St. Louis Cardinals placed the right-hander on the 10-day injured list before Tuesday's game.

Mikolas, 31, pitched four innings in an exhibition game last week. He missed spring training because of the injury, but after nearly four more months to rest during the coronavirus shutdown, he ramped up his activity when camp reconvened.

He was 27-18 with a 3.46 ERA in 64 starts the past two seasons.

Corey Kluber Leaves First Start For Rangers With Shoulder Tightness

Jul 27, 2020 9:09 AM

Corey Kluber's debut for the Texas Rangers lasted just one inning on Sunday.

The right-hander threw just 18 pitches before departing his first start in almost 15 months with shoulder tightness.

Texas acquired Kluber in a trade with Cleveland this offseason. The 34-year-old was knocked out of his last start for the Indians on May 1, 2019, when his right forearm was broken by a comeback liner.

"He is a tough guy and has pitched a lot of innings in the majors," Chris Woodward said. "When he says something is related to his arm, we are concerned. Hopefully he comes in tomorrow and feels a little better, but we'll see."

Justin Verlander Out With Forearm Strain

Jul 27, 2020 9:18 AM

Houston Astros ace Justin Verlander will miss time because of a strained right forearm, but he's disputing a report that he's finished for the season.

"The report that I'm currently missing the rest of the season is not accurate," he tweeted. "There is a forearm strain ... I'm hopeful that with some rest it will heal, and I'll be able to return soon. Thank you for all the well wishes."

Jacob deGrom's MRI On Sore Back Comes Back Clean

Jul 17, 2020 8:58 AM

The New York Mets have avoided a major blow.

An MRI on Jacob deGrom's sore back came back clean, according to reports. The pitcher was sent for tests after exiting an intrasquad game early with tightness in his back.

deGrom is supposed to start on Opening Day against the Atlanta Braves, but that could change now.

"It's a little bit too early still to make those decisions," Luis Rojas said. "We'll have to see what comes out of the MRI."

Rangers Unlikely To Have Willie Calhoun At Start Of Season

Jul 16, 2020 8:52 AM

Willie Calhoun is expected to miss the start of the season because of a hip strain.

The Texas Rangers thought they'd have the left fielder, who was ready to play after recovering from a broken jaw suffered in a spring training game more than four months ago.

"Just given the calendar, there's a good chance he'll miss a little bit of time right at the beginning. I'm hopeful it won't be more than a few days or a week," Jon Daniels said.

Calhoun exited an intrasquad game Monday night because of a sore hip, and an MRI revealed a Grade 1 strain in a small muscle.

Byron Buxton To Undergo Tests After Injuring Foot

Jul 14, 2020 9:05 AM

Byron Buxton was carted off at Target Field after suffering a left foot injury while tracking a long fly by Nelson Cruz during an intrasquad game Monday.

Rocco Baldelli says the Minnesota Twins are cautiously optimistic about the injury.

"Fortunately, relatively speaking, the initial once-over didn't show anything, which I take as a cautiously optimistic good sign," Baldelli said. "But we're going to go ahead and do a lot of other assessments and imaging tonight and tomorrow just to see what we can find and go from there.

"That's probably what you're hoping to see, but we also know that any time a guy is coming off the field -- and you want to make sure he's not walking off the field -- we're going to make sure we get him a full look-over by the medical staff."
