Giancarlo Stanton May Miss Start Of Season

Feb 27, 2020 8:27 AM

The New York Yankees will likely be without Giancarlo Stanton on Opening Day because of a strained right calf.

Stanton was injured near the end of defensive drills on Tuesday and an MRI found a Grade 1 strain.

"It will probably put us against it a little bit," Aaron Boone said. "I would say it's time for him to get back, but then getting built up and stuff. We'll see."

The Yankees open the season on March 26 against the Baltimore Orioles.

Yankees Shut Down Luis Severino With Forearm Soreness

Feb 21, 2020 7:29 AM

The New York Yankees have shut down Luis Severino after he reported right forearm discomfort, which appears to date back to last October.

Severino was scratched from throwing his second bullpen session in camp and didn't take part in fielding drills on Thursday.

Brian Cashman said Severino had two MRIs -- one in December and another in January -- and a CT scan after complaining of discomfort, and all tests have been negative.

The Yankees haven't ruled out Severino beginning the season on the injured list.

Mitch Haniger Undergoes Second Surgery In Three Weeks

Feb 14, 2020 7:32 AM

The Seattle Mariners won't have Mitch Haniger at the start of the season as he recovers from his second surgery in three weeks.

The second surgery was on Haniger's back, according to a source.

Jerry Dipoto said in Februrary that Haniger likely needed an initial surgery on a core muscle injury and he wasn't expected to be ready for Opening Day -- but that was before he had the second procedure.

Cole Hamels To Miss Start Of Season With Shoulder Injury

Feb 13, 2020 8:01 AM

Cole Hamels won't be ready for the start of the 2020 season after he suffered a shoulder injury while training.

Hamels is expected to be sidelined for at least three weeks, which won't allow him to get ready for the Atlanta Braves' opener in late March.

He reportedly began experiencing left shoulder discomfort after an exercise involving weighted medicine balls.

Hamels signed a one-year, $18 million deal with the Braves this offseason.

Angels Target Mid-May For Shohei Ohtani's Pitching Return

Feb 12, 2020 7:37 AM

Shohei Ohtani won't be ready to pitch in the Major Leagues until at least mid-May, according to Billy Eppler.

Ohtani is recovering from elbow and knee surgeries.

After having Tommy John surgery in October 2018, Ohtani contributed to the Los Angeles Angels in 2019 as a designated hitter. He then had season-ending surgery last September to address a rare condition in his left knee.

"The knee surgery pushed back his rehab and his throwing progression to complete the Tommy John rehab protocol," Eppler said. "So we're targeting about a mid-May return on the mound. He will be able to begin the season as a DH, pending no other unforeseen things happening."
