Dellin Betances Suffers Partially Torn Achilles In Return

Sep 18, 2019 7:32 AM

Dellin Betances made his season debut for the New York Yankees on Sunday, but his return didn't last very long.

The reliever suffered a partial tear of his left Achilles tendon when he landed awkwardly on the mound.

Betances was sore when he arrived at Yankee Stadium before Tuesday's game, and the club was concerned when he was unable to get on his toes.

He was sent for a scan and was examined by Dr. Justin Greisberg at New York-Presbyterian Hospital. He will get a second opinion from Dr. Martin O'Malley at the Hospital for Special Surgery.

A 31-year-old right-hander, Betances is a four-time All-Star who is eligible for free agency after the World Series.

White Sox Shut Down Lucas Giolito With Lat Strain

Sep 17, 2019 7:27 AM

Lucas Giolito won't pitch again this season.

The Chicago White Sox are shutting him down for the remainder of the year with a mild lat strain.

Giolito was scheduled to pitch on Tuesday against the Minnesota Twins.

"If we were in the playoff hunt at this point, I'd be arguing as much as I could to go out there and pitch and compete," he said. "I feel like with how I felt yesterday, I probably would have been able to get through it, but just understanding the situation, it's probably for the best to shut it down."

Giolito, 25, went 14-9 with a 3.41 ERA in 29 starts this year.
