Blue Jays First-Rounder Suspended 50 Games

Sep 21, 2014 7:21 AM

Marcus Stroman, Toronto's first-round pick in this past June's First-Year Player Draft, has been suspended 50 games by Major League Baseball for violating the game's drug prevention and treatment program.

Playing for Class-A Vancouver, Stroman tested positive for methylheaneamine.

"Despite taking precautions to avoid violating the minor league testing program, I unknowingly ingested a banned stimulant that was in an over-the-counter supplement," Stroman said in a statement.

"Nonetheless, I accept full responsibility and I want to apologize to the Toronto Blue Jays organization, my family, my teammates, and the Blue Jays fans everywhere. I look forward to putting this behind me and rejoining my teammates."

After drafting him with the 22nd overall pick, Toronto signed him to a $1.8-million bonus.

Cashman Unsurprised By Cabrera, Colon Suspensions

Sep 17, 2014 6:12 AM

Brian Cashman wasn't surprised by the 50-game suspensions Melky Cabrera and Bartolo Colon are serving for failed drug tests.

"Unfortunately, not surprised," Cashman said when asked about his impressions of the news.

Colon played for the Yankees last season, while Cabrera was traded to the Braves after the 2009 season.

"You see some spike in performance," Cashman said. "You hope it's not the case, but you scratch your head and you wonder at the same time. But then you sit there and get a comfort level: Tests are taking place, so if people are passing their tests."

Cabrera had a .906 OPS before his suspension.

"When we traded him to Atlanta we had him as a low-end, everyday regular or an excellent fourth outfielder," Cashman said of Cabrera. "And that's how we show where we thought his ceiling was. As you know, he was starting for us in the World Series, but we had him as a low-end, everyday guy, not a National League MVP candidate. So I wasn't surprised."

Red Sox Suspend Aceves For Arguing With Valentine

Aug 14, 2014 6:34 AM

The Red Sox have suspended reliever Alfredo Aceves for three games for "conduct detrimental to the team."

Aceves was reportedly upset at being passed over for a save opportunity on Friday night and stormed into the office of Bobby Valentine after the game.

According to a source, Aceves demanded a meeting with general manager Ben Cherington, but his request was denied because the executive was working on this weekend's mega deal with the Dodgers.

Scott Diamond has been suspended six games for throwing near the head of Josh Hamilton during Thursday's game.

The Twins left-hander will appeal the suspension.

"As I said [Thursday], the pitch got away from me," he said. "We were trying to work in. I'm glad nobody got hurt."

Diamond didn't come out and say it, but he indicated that he was protecting teammate Joe Mauer, who was inexplicably hit in the upper back by Rangers righthander Roy Oswalt.

Sabean Didn't Know About Cabrera's Suspension Until Wednesday

Sep 30, 2014 10:08 PM

Brian Sabean didn't learn about Melky Cabrera's positive testosterone test until Wednesday morning.

Sabean was asked on Thursday if he had any anger about the situation.

"Not at all," said Sabean. "If anything, I was so taken back it was deflating. I was actually in the meeting when Bruce (Bochy) talked to the players and I kind of got emotional because I didn’t see this coming. We’ve all been around the game a long time. We’re used to making changes and adjustments, as we do in life. This is one of those things where you’re punched in the stomach, but you no choice and you’ve got to move on.”

The positive test had nothing to do with the Giants ending extension talks in mid-July.

"It was a conceptual conversation and it never really went anywhere They pushed for doing something at the end of the year. I don’t know the timing of that against the question."
