Peralta Drops Appeal, Begins Suspension

Rays reliever Joel Peralta has dropped his appeal for having pine tar on his glove and will begin serving his eight-game suspension Friday night. Peralta was ejected from Tuesday night's game against the Nationals after umpires found pine tar on his mitt.

MLB Suspends Two Minor League Players

MLB announced today that two Minor League players have been suspended following their violations of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. Reds right-handed pitcher Luis Atilano has received a 50-game suspension without pay after a second violation for a drug of abuse. The suspension of Atilano, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Pensacola Blue Wahoos of the Southern League, is effective immediately. Red Sox Minor League right-handed pitcher Marco Duarte has received a 50-game suspension without pay after testing positive for an amphetamine. The suspension of Duarte, who is currently on the roster of the Double-A Portland Sea Dogs of the Eastern League, is effective immediately.

MLB Suspends Peralta For Pine Tar

Rays pitcher Joel Peralta has been suspended for eight games for possessing a foreign substance on his glove prior to the bottom of the eighth inning of his game against the Nationals on June 19. Peralta had been scheduled to begin serving his suspension tonight, when Tampa Bay is to conclude its series at Washington. However, he has elected to file an appeal. Thus, the discipline issued to him will be held in abeyance until the appeal process is complete.

MLB Suspends Phillies' Galvis 50-Games

The Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced today that Phillies infielder Freddy Galvis has received a 50-game suspension after testing positive for a metabolite of Clostebol, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of Major League Baseball’s Joint Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. The suspension of Galvis is effective immediately.
