Mariners Acquire Drew Smyly From Rays For Three Players

Jan 13, 2017 4:16 PM

The Seattle Mariners have acquired Drew Smyly from the Tampa Bay Rays for a package of three players.

The Mariners are sending Mallex Smith, who they acquired earlier from the Atlanta Braves, infielder Carlos Vargas and left-hander Ryan Yarbrough to the Rays.

"We have been clear that one of our top priorities this offseason was to continue to bolster our starting rotation," Jerry Dipoto said in a statement. "Today's moves allowed us to add an experienced pitcher to our starting group. Drew took the ball 30 times last season, threw over 175 innings and is a proven performer in the American League. He's a good fit for our club."

Just hours previously, Seattle acquired Smith and right-hander Shae Simmons from Atlanta in exchange for left-handed pitching prospects Luiz Gohara and Thomas Burrows.

Smyly, 27, was 7-12 with 4.88 ERA last season, establishing career highs in starts (30), innings (175 1/3) and strikeouts (167).

Royals Trade Jarrod Dyson To M's For Nathan Karns

Jan 9, 2017 7:35 AM

The Royals were interested in Seattle right-hander Nathan Karns going back to the winter meetings, but the Mariners were reluctant to give up a power arm under club control through 2020.

That changed on Friday.

After the Mariners traded outfielder Seth Smith to the Baltimore Orioles for veteran right-hander Yovani Gallardo, the idea of shipping Karns away became a bit more palatable. So, the Royals and Mariners were able to reach a deal that sent him to Kansas City for outfielder Jarrod Dyson.
