The San Diego Padres have 11 pitchers competing for rotation spots in camp and may use a unique strategy to maintain flexibility.

The Padres may go through an opposing lineup approximately once with a certain starting pitcher. Then they might replace him with another starter -- preferably of a different handedness -- in the early innings.

"It's well within intelligent thinking to say, you know what, let's flip this and take advantage of it," Andy Green said. "Let's force them to make a decision. At least it's something else they've got to think about."

In one of the more obvious decisions of the 2017 major league season, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts on Saturday officially named Clayton Kershaw as his Opening Day starter.

Kershaw will make his seventh consecutive Opening Day start when the Dodgers begin the season at home April 3 against the Padres.

The Padres have agreed to terms with right-hander Jered Weaver on a one-year deal worth $3 million, according to FanRag Sports and confirmed by ESPN.

The 34-year-old Weaver went 12-12 with a 5.06 ERA last season with the Angels. A California native, Weaver had spent his entire 11-year career with the Angels.

Jered Weaver has ended any doubt by making it clear to his former teammates that he won't be back with the Los Angeles Angels.

Garrett Richards told reporters that Weaver sent out a group text telling many Angels that it was a pleasure to play with them.

"After that went out, everything was put into perspective that he wasn't coming back," Richards said. "It's going to be weird."

Weaver has been connected to the San Diego Padres.

The San Diego Padres have agreed to a Minor League contract with Erick Aybar.

Aybar, 33, will compete for San Diego's starting shortstop job with Luis Sardinas.

He began last season with the Atlanta Braves.
