Joe Musgrove Calls For Pirates To Add Rotation Help

May 28, 2019 8:17 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates are without two starters currently and they've had to improvise with openers and spot starters.

The rotation has a 6.68 ERA in May, the third worst in Major League baseball.

Things reached a boiling point for Joe Musgrove on Saturday night when he was forced to pitch an extra inning to help out the worn down bullpen despite getting hit hard by the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"It would be nice to have another starter that we can run out there," Musgrove said. "Not to say that [Steven] Brault and Rookie [Davis] — I heard [Mitch] Keller's coming up — can't do it.

"But if you look at the staffs around the league and the division we're in, it's tough. We have to be running out the best thing we have every night. That's what we're trying to do right now."

Musgrove has a 4.27 ERA with 45 strikeouts in 59 innings this season.

"Our coaching staff and our ownership knows the position we're in right now," he said. "It's up to them to make the moves.

"We have guys here who can compete. We're doing a good job right now of staying afloat. Having another solid arm in the rotation that has been through a lot and experienced a lot would be nice."

Pirates GM Wants Players To Re-Enter Games After Concussion Tests

May 28, 2019 8:03 AM

Pittsburgh Pirates general manager Neal Huntington would like to see Major League Baseball allow players to re-enter games after being examined for concussions.

The club lost Francisco Cervelli to a documented concussion on Saturday night and placed him on the injured list.

"Any player that had an obvious concussion risk incident should be allowed to be removed from the game, taken off the field, taken into the locker room, assessed by a doctor, assessed by a trainer, go through an extended period of time and then re-enter the game," Huntington said. "Because right now, all of this has to happen on the field."

"The player has to feel pressure as he's standing there with 30,000 or 10,000 or 50,000 eyes on him," he added. "He has to feel pressure to make a decision whether (he's) in or (he's) out of this game. He knows if he takes himself out and he's the catcher, there's only one other catcher, and the game becomes a fiasco if that other catcher gets hurt."
