Pirates Clinch First Playoff Berth Since 1992

Sep 24, 2013 9:19 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Chicago Cubs on Monday night, clinching their first playoff berth since 1992 in the process.

They are ensured of one of the two National League Wild Card berths.

"Even though I didn't lose for the last 20 years, they make you feel like you are. You feel like you lost those 20 years," Andrew McCutchen said. "That's all you hear. You hear it every single day -- 'When's it going to change? You think this is the year?' You get sick and tired of hearing that. It's awesome that there won't be any questions anymore. The question is, 'Are we going to be able to go farther?'"

Pittsburgh players sang Journey's "Don't Stop Believing," and chanted, "MVP! MVP!" while surrounding McCutchen.

Jason Grilli is expected to take the ball the next time the Pittsburgh Pirates find themselves in a save situation.

Mark Melancon will resume his earlier setup duties.

Their roles have reverted to what they had been prior to Grilli's July 22 forearm injury.

"I talked to Mark and Jason. If there's a save opportunity, Jason gets it [Saturday]," Clint Hurdle said. "I'm approaching it day by day."

A.J. Burnett doesn't know if he'll return to pitch for the Pittsburgh Pirates next season.

Burnett is "50-50" on continuing his baseball career or spending time with his family.

The decision will depend on what happens in the next several weeks.

"I do want to go out with a bang, and I do want to go out a Pirate," Burnett said.

The 36-year-old is in the final year of a five-year, $82.5 million deal signed with the Yankees in 2008.

Pirates Shut Down Wandy Rodriguez

Sep 14, 2013 5:28 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates have decided to shut down Wandy Rodriguez due to continuing pain and discomfort in his left forearm.

"Wandy has worked diligently to return to action but despite all Wandy's and our medical staffs' work and efforts, he has not been able to return to pitch without pain. We have decided that it is in Wandy's best interests and the Pirates' best interests to allow more time for the injury to the flexor tendon in his left forearm to heal and to shift our focus from a return in 2013 to having Wandy ready for Opening Day 2014," the team said in a statement.

McCutchen's Advice Cubs: Stay The Course

Sep 13, 2013 7:57 AM

Andrew McCutchen, who has endured a handful of disappointing seasons with the Pittsburgh Pirates, has some advice for the struggling Chicago Cubs.

"First, you have to believe in what you can do for yourself," McCutchen said. "After that, just have faith in each other around the clubhouse. That's all you can do from there on out, just controlling what you can do. Things that you can't do, you just let it play out."

The Pirates endured 20 straight losing seasons prior to this year.

"When you lose for so long, you hope those things that happen in the minors, that those guys get the work they need to get done so when they get the chance to come here and play, they're ready to go," McCutchen said. "It's not fun when you are losing, but it's a process that down the road that things are going to get better.''

He sees good things coming for the Cubs.

"I'm sure they have a lot of good talent," McCutchen said. "And they're going to continue to get better. It takes time. It takes time getting guys comfortable, and getting feet wet just performing."

Pirates End Streak Of 20 Straight Losing Seasons

Sep 4, 2013 10:36 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates beat the Milwaukee Brewers on Tuesday night, giving them their 81st win of the season.

It marks Pittsburgh's first non-losing season in 20 years.

"The one family I'm happy for is the Clemente family," Clint Hurdle said. "They told me earlier in the season that we can't have 21 losing seasons, that we've got to find a way to not have Roberto's number tied to that. I told them we'd find a way to take care of that. It's been taken care of."

The Pirates are also two games up on the St. Louis Cardinals in the National League Central.

"We've played good baseball all year," Travis Snider said. "To have the veterans that we've picked up, and you add them into the mix with the guys that have grinded all year, brings some great personality, some great veteran leadership and overall great players."
