Jason Vargas On Dispute With Reporter: 'All The Info Isn't Out There'

Jun 27, 2019 7:41 AM

Jason Vargas answered questions on Wednesday for the first time since being fined for an expletive-filled confrontation with a reporter.

"It was an unfortunate confrontation," Vargas said. "I don't think all the information is really out there. I don't think this is a time to get into that. But I think that anybody that knows me, anybody that has played with me, there's never been a situation like that. So to think it happened out of the blue, it's foolish.''

Vargas declined to explain what he meant.

"It's over,'' he said. "Our organization made a statement. We put an end to it. But I think it's pretty obvious all the info isn't out there."

Mets' Front Office Has Dictated In-Game Moves

Jun 26, 2019 9:56 AM

The New York Mets' front office has dictated at least some pitching moves during games this season, according to multiple sources.

The New York Post first reported the story. A specific incident occurred on June 1 when Jacob deGrom was removed from a game while dealing with a hip cramp.

Front offices are usually involved in the planning of lineups and possible pitching matchups, but most managers have the autonomy to make moves through the course of each game.

New York Mets first baseman Pete Alonso hit his 27th home run of the season Sunday to set the franchise rookie record.

Alonso's homer in the top of the fourth inning off the Chicago Cubs' Cole Hamels traveled 454 feet to center at Wrigley Field. The home run is tied for his second-longest this season.

Darryl Strawberry had held the Mets' record for home runs by a rookie since he hit 26 in 1983.

Mickey Callaway Shouts At Reporter; Mets Apologize

Jun 24, 2019 8:35 AM

Mets manager Mickey Callaway cursed at a reporter, and pitcher Jason Vargas had to be restrained from charging him during a confrontation in the team's clubhouse after a loss Sunday.

The dustup with beat writer Tim Healey of Newsday occurred after the Mets blew a late lead in a 5-3 defeat to the Cubs at Wrigley Field. There was no physical contact.

In a story published by Newsday on Sunday night, Healey said Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon called him "to apologize on behalf of the organization."

Pete Alonso Ties NL Rookie Home Run Record

Jun 21, 2019 9:56 AM

Pete Alonso hit a two-run home run in the New York Mets' 7-4 win over the Chicago Cubs on Thursday.

It was Alonso's 25th home run, tying the record for most homers by a National League rookie before the All-Star break set by Cody Bellinger in 2017.

He became the first rookie in NL history to hit at least 25 home runs in his team's first 75 games of the season.

"He's probably the one guy in our lineup right now that you're gonna say, 'Don't let him beat us,'" Mickey Callaway said. "They're not just trying to get ahead and making sure they get a strike. Pete does a good job of laying off the ones he can't hit, and when they make one mistake, he makes them pay."
