Dave Roberts Will Return As Dodgers Manager

Oct 11, 2019 7:55 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers were eliminated by the Washington Nationals in the NLDS, providing another disappointing playoff loss.

The loss included more playoff struggles from Clayton Kershaw and some questionable decisions by Dave Roberts.

Despite the disappointment, Roberts will return to manage the Dodgers in 2020.

His current deal runs through 2022.

Howie Kendrick hit a grand slam in the top of the 10th inning to give the Washington Nationals a 7-3 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers in Game 5 of the NLDS on Wednesday night.

The Nationals will face the St. Louis Cardinals for the National League pennant.

Things looked promising for the Dodgers early on with Max Muncy and Enrique Hernandez going deep in the first and second innings, respectively. The Dodgers held a 3-0 lead until the sixth when the Nationals started to find their offense.

Juan Soto hit an RBI single in the sixth. Anthony Rendon and Soto each added solo home runs in the eighth.

Hernandez singled to left with one out in the bottom of the ninth, but L.A. couldn't get him into scoring position.

Kendrick's slam off of Joe Kelly came after Adam Eaton walked, Rendon hit a ground rule double and Soto was intentionally walked. The Dodgers went down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the inning to end the game.

Clayton Kershaw came on to pitch in the seventh, allowing the home runs to Rendon and Soto and blowing the Dodgers' lead.

Recap: Max Scherzer Dominates, Nationals Force Game 5

Oct 7, 2019 10:33 PM

Justin Turner homered off Max Scherzer in the first inning, but the Los Angeles Dodgers were silenced for the remainder of the game as the Washington Nationals won 6-1 and forced a Game 5 in the NLDS.

Scherzer was brilliant after allowing Turner to take him deep. He threw 109 pitches over seven innings, allowing just four hits. He struck out seven and walked three. Sean Doolittle and Daniel Hudson combined to close out the game for Washington.

Anthony Rendon was the offensive star for the Nationals. He hit two sacrifice flies (in the third and sixth) and had an RBI single in the fifth inning. Ryan Zimmerman clubbed a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth.

Rich Hill, who started for the Dodgers, went 2 2/3 innings. He walked four and allowed one run on two hits. Julio Urias struggled, getting just two outs out of the bullpen. He allowed three runs on three hits.

The two clubs will face off in Game 5 on Wednesday in Los Angeles with Stephen Strasburg taking on Walker Buehler.

Oct 7, 2019 7:39 AM

The Washington Nationals held a 2-1 lead entering the sixth inning on Sunday night, when the Los Angeles Dodgers erupted to take Game 3 of the NLDS.

The Dodgers won 10-4 and took a 2-1 series lead.

Juan Soto hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the first and Max Muncy continued his hot hitting with a solo jack in the fifth before the Dodgers broke things open in the sixth.

Russell Martin got the scoring started with a two-run double. Enrique Hernandez followed that up with a two-run double of his own and Justin Turner capped it off with a three-run home run to left center.

Los Angeles did a majority of the damage against Patrick Corbin, who surrendered six runs and recorded just two outs. He relieved Anibal Sanchez, who struck out nine over five innings and allowed just one run on four hits.

The Nationals answered the Dodgers' big inning with two runs, but never got closer.

Washington will look to remain alive on Monday with Max Scherzer on the hill opposite Rich Hill.

Dodgers Jump All-Over Patrick Corbin, Take 2-1 Series Lead

Oct 7, 2019 1:20 AM

Patrick Corbin, pitching in relief during Game 3 of the NLDS on Sunday, allowed six earned runs in two-thirds of an inning. The Washington lefty, who started Game 1, entered the contest in the top of the sixth with his team leading 2-1 over the Los Angeles Dodgers. After allowing a leadoff single to Cody Bellinger, Corbin recorded consecutive strikeouts against Corey Seager and A.J. Pollock.

But with two outs, Gavin Lux kept the inning alive with a single, then catcher Russell Martin followed with a two-run double. After pinch hitter Chris Taylor drew a walk, Joc Pederson plated two more runs with another double.

Corbin intentionally walked Max Muncy, and then was lifted in favor of righty Wander Suero. The first hitter that Suero faced, Justin Turner, blasted a three-run homer, giving L.A. an 8-2 lead. The Dodgers went on to win 10-4 to take a 2-1 series lead.

Recap: Nationals Strike Early, Ride Strasburg To Game 2 Win

Oct 5, 2019 7:55 AM

The Washington Nationals jumped out to a 3-0 lead over the Los Angeles Dodgers on Friday night and rode Stephen Strasburg to a Game 2 victory.

The NLDS is tied 1-1 as the series shifts east.

Washington's early lead was built via an RBI single by Howie Kendrick in the first inning and RBIs by Adam Eaton and Anthony Rendon in the second. With a 3-0 lead in place, Strasburg took over.

The right-hander struck out 10 Dodgers over six innings. He allowed just three hits and L.A. didn't break through until a sacrifice fly by Justin Turner in the sixth.

With Strasburg out of the game, Max Muncy's solo home run in the seventh brought the Dodgers to within a run. Davey Martinez, however, wasn't fooling around. He brought Max Scherzer out to pitch the eighth, the Nationals held off the Dodgers and added an insurance run in the eighth.

Scherzer is expected to start Game 3 on Sunday night against Hyun-Jun Ryu.
