Kershaw Pitches Dodgers To NL West Title

Sep 25, 2014 7:16 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers beat the San Francisco Giants on Wednesday night to clinch the National League West title.

They rode Clayton Kershaw, who tied a career-high with his 21st win, to victory.

"You can't take lightly what we did," Kershaw said. "You got to celebrate accomplishments and that's what we did. It's really fun to celebrate with these guys."

It is the second-straight division title for the Dodgers.

Kershaw allowed one run and eight hits in eight innings, struck out 11 and walked none in his last start of the regular season, having won his final seven starts. He is trying to become the first player to lead the major leagues in ERA (1.77) in four consecutive seasons.

Bumgarner Denies Throwing At Puig

Dec 18, 2014 4:46 AM

Madison Bumgarner hit Yasiel Puig with a slider in the first inning of Tuesday night's game between the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers.

The hit-by-pitch came after Jacob Turner led off the game with a home run. Puig hit the dirt when the pitch hit his foot, looked at Bumgarner, then the two exchanged words as benches cleared.

"I tried to strike him out on a back-door cutter, threw it across [and] hit him in the foot," Bumgarner said. "It happens pretty often to a left-handed pitcher with a cutter or a slider. ... He turned around and looked at me like he had something in mind, so ...

"I probably said something first. He's sitting there staring at me. I don't know how to say this without getting myself in trouble but -- I don't know."

Bumgarner and Puig have a history. On May 9, Puig homered off Bumgarner and flipped his bat in celebration. Bumgarner yelled at Puig as he circled the bases and came toward him between third base and home plate.

"I hit a home run, and we had a little back and forth," said Puig. "I'm not sure if it continued tonight. I just reacted tonight."

With six innings pitched on Monday night, Dan Haren reached 180 innings on the season, which guaranteed a $10 million option for next season.

With the 180 innings pitched, Haren also earned a $500,000 bonus.

The option is Haren's, so he could opt to leave the Los Angeles Dodgers and become a free agent.

Kemp, Puig Share Words In Dugout

Sep 20, 2014 7:43 PM

Matt Kemp and Yasiel Puig got into a verbal altercation in the dugout during Monday night's win over the Colorado Rockies.

The spat was caught by Colorado's television cameras.

Kemp, who had struck out earlier in the sixth inning, was seen pursuing Puig the length of the dugout and yelling in his direction before manager Don Mattingly stepped between them and Kemp turned and walked up the tunnel toward the clubhouse.

The topic of the disagreement wasn't revealed, but it's possible Kemp was upset that Puig didn't take third base on Adrian Gonzalez's single to right field right before Kemp batted.

Several sources have described the clubhouse atmosphere as "dysfunctional."

Kershaw Wins 18th, Lowers ERA To 1.67

Sep 14, 2014 5:06 AM

Clayton Kershaw became Major League Baseball's first 18-game winner on Monday night as he defeated the San Diego Padres.

Kershaw allowed three runs, just one earned, while striking out eight over eight innings. He lowered baseball's best ERA to just 1.67 in the 9-4 win.

"It was a good night for us. There wasn't a whole lot of stress because we got some runs early -- and we haven't had too many of those," said Kershaw, who hadn't received more than four runs of support while he was in the game in any of his previous seven outings. "Obviously when you get that big of a lead, you just want to pound the zone. I got some good plays defensively behind me."

Kershaw is 15-1 with a 1.20 ERA and six complete games in his last 18 starts.

Concern Surrounds Puig's Power Drought

Sep 21, 2014 8:16 AM

Since June 1, Yasiel Puig has two home runs in 78 games.

At the end of May he was primed for a huge season as he was hitting .344/.436/.615 with 11 home runs.

Since Aug. 1, he's hitting .207 with no home runs and just three extra-base hits in 111 at-bats.

Puig is still having a solid season overall, ranking fifth in the NL with his .382 OBP, but his lack of power since May ended is a bit alarming. Hitting fastballs has been his problem.

Versus fastballs, through May 31: .341/.437/.636, 14 BB, 13 SO, 6 HR in 88 AB
Versus fastballs, since June 1: .214/.311/.352, 20 BB, 38 SO, 1 HR in 145 AB
