Dodgers Place Kershaw On DL

Mar 29, 2014 11:34 PM

Dodgers pitching ace Clayton Kershaw was placed on the 15-day disabled list Saturday for the first time in his seven-year career because of a swollen muscle in his left upper back, according to an ESPN.com report.

The move comes one day after Kershaw told manager Don Mattingly he no longer felt pain in the area.

Kershaw To Miss L.A's U.S. Opener

Mar 27, 2014 10:08 AM

Clayton Kershaw will not start on Sunday against the San Diego Padres in the first game of the regular season in the United States.

An MRI showed inflammation in a muscle in Kershaw's back.

"It's nothing that I'm too worried about. It's really frustrating more than anything. The timing of it," Kershaw said.

"It's just one start that has to be pushed back. It's definitely something that if I had to pitch tomorrow, I could probably do it. It just wouldn't feel great."

Mattingly, Puig Meet To Clear The Air

Mar 26, 2014 10:15 AM

Don Mattingly met with Yasiel Puig on Tuesday to discuss comments the manager made about the outfielder's injuries following Sunday's game in Australia.

Puig missed Tuesday's team workouts to receive treatment for lower back inflammation after an MRI revealed no structural damage. He is expected back on the field Wednesday.

"We're good. I've got no issues with Yasiel," Mattingly said.

Mattingly claims his comments were more the result of his frustration with the Dodgers nearly blowing a seven-run lead than anything Puig did. He added that pregame comments about Puig's theatrics when he swings and misses and appears injured were unfairly "pushed" by reporters into his postgame comments.

"I know Yasiel is a huge lightning rod, and anything I say is a huge story and anything he does is a huge story," Mattingly said. "Maybe I should have been more clear -- the before and after were two different things."

Dodgers Break Yankees 15-Year Streak Of MLB's Highest Payroll

Mar 26, 2014 12:11 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers will end the New York Yankees' 15-year streak of having the highest payroll in Major League Baseball.

The Dodgers have a projected payroll of $235 million, while the Yankees will come in at $204 million.

The Philadelphia Phillies have an $180 million payroll, followed by the Boston Red Sox at $163 million and Detroit Tigers at $162 million.

"We've got great ownership and a great fan base, and we need to do what we can to win games," Dodgers general manager Ned Colletti said last week in Sydney, where Los Angeles swept its opening, two-game series against Arizona.

"I don't think the guys worry about it. I know we don't worry about it," Colletti said. "We're expected to win, and that's how we go about it. Money doesn't mean you win. Money just means you have a chance to get the best players."

Puig Already Testing Mattingly's Patience

Mar 23, 2014 12:12 PM

The Dodgers won their first two games of the season in Australia, but there were signs of some discord before the team jetted back to Los Angeles.

Yasiel Puig struck out in the ninth inning of Sunday's 7-5 win and then did not return to right field in the bottom half of the inning. Before the game, Mattingly told reporters that Puig "grabs something every time he takes a swing and misses."

Asked what injury caused Puig to leave Sunday's game, Mattingly said, "I guess his back." He then seemed to react sarcastically when asked about the severity of the injury.
