Kemp Gets Five At-Bats In Rehab Game

Aug 30, 2013 8:20 AM

Matt Kemp got five at-bats in his first rehab game with Class A Rancho Cucamonga on Thursday night, taking the next step towards a return to the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He went 0-for-5 after missing five weeks with a sprained ankle. Kemp served as the team's designated hitter and hit second in the lineup.

"I got more comfortable as the game went on," Kemp said. "I knew I wasn't going to come out feeling super good. But I hit some balls hard and that's all you can ask for."

Aug 28, 2013 5:11 PM

Matt Kemp, who could return as soon as next week, plans to play everyday for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Dodgers have Yasiel Puig, Carl Crawford and Andre Ethier.

Kemp tested his ankle running the bases on Tuesday.

"I'm a center fielder. That's my role, to play center field every day," Kemp said. "I don't know why people keep asking me what role I'm going to play. I want to play every day. I don't like to sit out games. I like to give my team a chance to win, and I feel like I can do that."

He injured his ankle sliding into home plate July 21.

Mattingly Was Two Days Away From Being Fired

Aug 26, 2013 8:41 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers struggled over the first third of the season, briefly putting Don Mattingly on the hot seat.

According to a baseball official, Mattingly might have had 48 hours to save his job at one point. The Dodgers lost the first two games of a series with the San Diego Padres on June 20-21. They were 9.5 games out of first place in the National League West and 12 games under .500.

Had the Dodgers lost the last two games in San Diego, according to the official, Mattingly might have been fired. The Dodgers won the final two games of the series, beginning a 42-8 run.

"I love my manager, as I always have," Stan Kasten said when asked to confirm the story.

Josh Beckett To Resume Throwing

Aug 26, 2013 8:23 AM

Josh Beckett has declared himself ahead of schedule after thoracic outlet syndrome surgery and expects to be ready for the start of spring training.

The Los Angeles Dodgers acquired Beckett in a blockbuster trade with the Boston Red Sox a year ago.

"There's still some hurdles to get over, but I feel really good for where I'm at," Beckett said. "We were looking at eight weeks before I started throwing again, and I beat that by about two weeks. So we're ahead of schedule right now. I don't think anybody was expecting that, so everything's going good. But I think we'll know more probably when I begin my bullpens. December's going to be long, so I'd like to get over those mental blocks now. It's something to look forward to."

Beckett was 0-5 with a 5.19 ERA in his first eight starts this season before going in the disabled list in mid-May.

Dodgers Working To Keep Crawford Healthy

Aug 25, 2013 5:12 PM

Carl Crawford was not in the starting lineup for the Los Angeles Dodgers on Saturday afternoon.

Crawford had started 21 of 24 games, but has battled left hamstring and lower back trouble this season.

"I want to take care of Carl from the standpoint of him being healthy the rest of the year," Don Mattingly said. "I'm sure he wants to play, but it's my job to give these guys the best chance to be healthy. We found out with Carl if you go too many days in a row, something ends up nailing him."

Dodgers 'Absolutely' Interested In Extending Ramirez

Aug 24, 2013 5:58 PM

The Los Angeles Dodgers are "absolutely" interested in extending Hanley Ramirez's contract, according to controlling owner Mark Walter.

Ramirez's current contract runs through the end of the 2014 season.

"I think a guy like Hanley Ramirez, he's a special, special player," Walter said. "If you know where we could find five more, we'll take them all. I don't think there are five more."

Ramirez will earn $15.5 million this year and $16 million next year.

"Hanley's a special guy," Walter said. "He's fun in the clubhouse. He inspires other people. He hits the ball harder than anybody else."
