Magic Johnson: Not 'Lost Season' For Dodgers

Oct 30, 2013 3:32 PM

Despite saying in February that anything short of a World Series appearance would be "not a good season for us" Magic Johnson doesn't believe the 2013 campaign was a "lost season" for the Los Angeles Dodgers.

"We're excited about what we're building, and we're ahead of schedule," Johnson, a co-owner, told 710 ESPNLA. "I never thought we would get there that fast, to play in the [NLCS]. I was excited.

"I'll always be upset if we lose. To my thinking, to not win a championship is always not a good season for me. That's my personal feeling. I don't want to say it was a 'lost season,' because we're still coming together and we'll be even better next season."

The Dodgers lost to the St. Louis Cardinals in the NLCS.

Dodgers Expected To Pursue Masahiro Tanaka

Oct 30, 2013 8:12 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers are not afraid to spend in the international market and are expected to pursue Masahiro Tanaka.

Tanaka was 24-0 with a 1.27 ERA during the regular season for the Tohoku Rakuten Golden Eagles in the Japanese Pacific League.

The Dodgers have been unusually open in their interest in signing Tanaka.

"We've scouted him a lot, we're very much aware of him," Ned Colletti said at his season-ending press conference. "We saw him as recently as two days ago."

Mattingly Will Honor Final Year Of Contract

Oct 24, 2013 10:39 AM

The Los Angeles Dodgers confirmed on Wednesday night that Don Mattingly will return for at least one more season.

"Of course," Stan Kasten said. "I never had any thought he would renege on his contract. It was never a question for me."

Sources with knowledge of the situation said the Dodgers intend to begin dialogue with Mattingly on a new contract in the next few days.

Mattingly put pressure on the front office during a news conference Monday to either extend him a multiyear contract offer or move on without him, saying he had been frustrated with his status as a "lame-duck" manager during the season.

Dodgers Fire Trey Hillman

Oct 22, 2013 6:19 PM

The Los Angeles Dodgers have fired bench coach Trey Hillman, a move that could increase tension between the organization and Don Mattingly.

"This organization treated me great," Hillman said. "I think this organization wants to get somewhere real quick and they just didn't feel like I was best for the manager and the players."

Mattingly said Monday that he hoped his entire coaching staff would return.

He also put pressure on the front office during a news conference Monday to either extend him a multiyear contract offer or to move on without him.

Kemp was already coming off a procedure on his left shoulder earlier this month. His availability for spring training is in doubt.

Kemp injured his ankle with an awkward slide into home plate July 21.

He flew to North Carolina for the surgery, which was performed by Dr. Robert Anderson. It involved removing several spurs and a loose body, and doing a microfracture on the talus bone.

Mattingly Uncertain Of Return Despite Option

Oct 21, 2013 4:16 PM

Don Mattingly remains uncertain about his return to the Los Angeles Dodgers despite the fact that the 2014 option on his contract has vested.

Mattingly felt the Dodgers put him in a difficult position by making him manage last season in the final year of his contract.

"When you're put in this situation, the organization basically says, 'We don't know if you can manage or not,'" Mattingly said. "So, that's the position I've been in all season long, so that's not a great position for me as a manager. That's the way it is, that's the way the organization wanted it last year, that's fine."

Mattingly's option, reportedly worth $1.4 million, would put him in line to return, but the team has made no announcement about his future.
