Cubs, Dodgers May Be Nearing Dempster Deal

Dempster Still Only Willing To Approve Trade To Dodgers

Jul 31, 2012 7:35 AM

Ryan Dempster remains adamant that he will only approve a trade to the Dodgers, according to sources. Dempster's service time gives him the ability to reject any deal before it is completed. The Braves, who had a deal in place for Dempster last week, went in another direction by acquiring Paul Malholm from Chicago on Monday. The Cubs are "trying to bend over backwards" to send Dempster to his preferred destination, one source said, but the two sides remain at an impasse.

Dodgers Targeting Victorino, Dempster, Soriano

Jul 31, 2012 7:31 AM

The Dodgers have swung a pair of trades in the last week, adding Hanley Ramirez and Brandon League, but sources say they aren't done dealing. Los Angeles is targeting Philadelphia's Shane Victorino, and both Ryan Dempster and Alfonso Soriano of the Cubs. The trades could hinge on one another. If the Dodgers land Victorino, they would rule out pursuing Soriano.

Source: Dempster Open To More Options

Jul 28, 2012 9:36 AM

The Dodgers are not the only team Ryan Dempster would accept a trade to this month, according to a source. Dempster will consider a number of teams, including the Dodgers and Braves, if the Cubs come to a deal. "He has not said that he wouldn't go to Atlanta or anywhere else for that matter," the source said. "He wants to take his time and has earned the right to wait on approving a deal having his 10-5 rights."

Dodgers May Also Acquire Soriano, LaHair In Dempster Deal

Jul 27, 2012 3:09 PM

The Dodgers and Cubs have had talks about including Alfonso Soriano or Bryan LaHair in a potential trade centered around Ryan Dempster, according to sources. The negotiations for Dempster have stalled on what Los Angeles will give up in the trade. Including Soriano and/or LaHair is still viewed as a longshot at this point, but the Cubs are desperate to get rid of Soriano. Chicago would likely have to pay almost all of Soriano's remaining $48 million in salary.

Dodgers Reject Chicago's Recent Dempster Offer

Jul 27, 2012 7:51 AM

The Cubs offered to send Ryan Dempster to the Dodgers for right-handed prospect Allen Webster, but Los Angeles has rejected the deal. The issue appears to be that the Dodgers don't want Dempster as much as the veteran wants to pitch for them. The Dodgers have only offered up a few middling prospects for Dempster, while they appear to be more interested in Matt Garza. Garza is under contract through the 2013 season, while Dempster will be a free agent this winter.
