Dodgers Inquire About Oswalt
The Dodgers called the Astros regarding the availability of pitcher Roy Oswalt on Thursday, according to reports. "I don't talk about trades," Houston general manager Ed Wade said. The Dodgers join the Rangers, Tigers, Angels and the Nationals as teams said to be interested in Oswalt.
Blake Accuses Lilly Of Cheating
Casey Blake accused Ted Lilly of cheating on Thursday, trying unsuccessfully to persuade the umpires that the Chicago Cubs pitcher should have been cited for starting his windup on some pitches from in front of the rubber. "I know he doesn't have an overpowering fastball," Blake said. "I know he's trying to get as much of an edge as he can. But he moved in. "That's cheating. You've got to stay on the rubber." "Sometimes a batter will get in the box and he'll step out, and behind the box, and on the lines," Lilly said. "I don't think he's trying to cheat. It might not be intentional." By pitching from in front of the rubber, Lilly said, a pitcher would lose the leverage of pushing off the rubber. Any such deliveries were strictly inadvertent, he said. "I might have done it a couple times, just trying to gain my footing," he said.
Dodgers DFA Ortiz, Call Up Justin Miller
The Dodgers purchased the contract of right-handed reliever Justin Miller from Triple-A Albuquerque on Thursday and designated for assignment reliever Ramon Ortiz. Despite the move, the Dodgers remain a pitcher short. Manager Joe Torre said another move is likely, probably a swing man, and he indicated it wouldn't be made until after the club sees what its latest fifth-starter candidate, Carlos Monasterios, does in Colorado on Friday night. That could mean left-hander Scott Elbert is under consideration. He starts for Albuquerque on Friday. Charlie Haeger has a rehab start for Class A Inland Empire on Saturday, and Torre said, "my guess is he'll join us shortly." Torre said he would use the durable Miller to pitch out of a jam during an inning or for multiple frames. "He can pitch every day. I saw him do that with the Giants last year," said Torre. "In Spring Training, we knew we couldn't take him, even though you want on your staff someone with durability."
Dodgers Inquire On Oswalt, Cliff Lee
The Dodgers have asked the Seattle Mariners about Cliff Lee and the Houston Astros about Roy Oswalt, but neither team is currently interested. The Dodgers' top prospects are at the lower levels of the minor leagues, so the team would be an unlikely trade partner should the Mariners or Astros want a trade package to feature talent ready for the major leagues.
Dodgers Could Get Ethier Back Sunday
Dodgers outfielder Andre Ethier could rejoin the team as early as Sunday. Ethier has been out since May 14 with a broken finger and was originally projected to miss six weeks. He's already taking batting practice. "As of right now, there's no indication why not," Ethier said.
Ortiz, Santana To Attend Lima's Funeral
Red Sox designated hitter David Ortiz and Mets pitcher Johan Santana are leading a group of active players who will attend Jose Lima's funeral services in New York on Thursday. Ortiz said he got permission from the Red Sox to take the day off, but hopes to be back in time for the team's game against the Royals on Thursday night. "I still can't believe that Lima is dead," Ortiz said. "I will say goodbye for the last time to one of the persons that has been closest to my heart since I began playing baseball." Ortiz is a former teammate of Lima with the Leones del Escogido in the Dominican winter league.
Police Rule Out Foul Play In Lima's Death
An autopsy on former major league pitcher Jose Lima was completed Tuesday, but official results aren't expected until early next week. The initial theory of a massive heart attack is still in place, said a source, and police have ruled out foul play and no evidence of drugs were found in Lima's system. Authorities say paramedics found Lima, 37, in full cardiac arrest at his home in California early Sunday.
Furcal On Track To Return Tuesday
The Dodgers are expected to have shortstop Rafael Furcal back on Tuesday against the Cubs. Furcal responded well physically after playing in an extended spring training game on Saturday. He is already eligible to come off the disabled list with a hamstring injury. "It's a combination of [reasons]," manager Joe Torre said of the extra time. "It just lets him have the assurance of a couple of extra days and the fact we have to decide what we're doing."
Jose Lima Dead At 37
Former All-Star reliever Jose Lima died Sunday morning at his Los Angeles home. According to Lima's wife, he died of a heart attack. "Jose was complaining while sleeping and I just thought he was having a nightmare," Dorce Astacio told ESPNdeportes.com. "I called the paramedics, but they couldn't help him." Lima was 89-102 in 13 seasons with the Tigers, Astros, Royals, Dodgers and Mets.
Manny Suffers Freak Toe Injury
Dodgers outfielder Manny Ramirez was removed from the starting lineup on Wednesday after suffering a freak toe injury. Los Angeles manager Joe Torre said Ramirez was loosening up his legs by swinging them in the training room when he kicked the leg of a table with the little toe on his left leg. Ramirez was able to pinch hit in the fifth inning and an X-ray showed no damage.
