Agent: Furcal Paring Potential Suitors
Free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal is close to selecting a team as he begins comparing the offers he has received. "Before Monday or Tuesday, we'll have it down to at least two teams," Furcal's agent Paul Kinzer said Wednesday. Oakland and San Francisco have been two of Furcal's most ardent suitors, and Kinzer said that two other teams remain in consideration.
Dodgers Hint That Their Offer Is Manny's Best
Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt hinted Tuesday that the team might be reluctant to sweeten the offer they made Manny Ramirez. "There's nothing that's gotten better in the economy since that time," McCourt said. "You can interpret that how you like." McCourt also said that the ball is "100 percent" in Manny's court at this point in the negotiations. "We made what I consider an aggressive offer, particularly in light of the economy," McCourt said. "We were hoping to get something done quickly. That didn't happen. We'll continue to make decisions in the best interest of the club, both short-term and long-term."

Bowa, however, knows the pitfalls of signing Ramirez to a long-term deal. "There are pros and cons," added Bowa. "If he gets four years and is playing left field, I don't know if he can do it. He might, but for that length, is the American League a better fit because of the DH? "I know what I saw after he got here. He was going first to third and running hard and hustling. He made a great impression on our young kids. He was a leader in the clubhouse. "To be honest, when I first heard we were going to trade for him, I said, 'Oh, OK, this ought to be fun.' I had seen it from the other side when Joe [Torre] and I were in New York. I saw Manny being Manny and it upset me."

Furcal revealed that he has been offered a four-year, $48-million contract by the A's, and that the Mets have contacted him about moving to second base as well. "The offers made by the Athletics and the Mets of New York are tempting, but we'll make a decision after I meet with my lawyer because there are various factors that we have to evaluate," he said. "But my general feeling is that every offer that's been made is important, which is why we want to make a decision that?s well thought out."
