Dodgers Hint That Their Offer Is Manny's Best

Nov 26, 2008 4:05 PM

Dodgers' owner Frank McCourt hinted Tuesday that the team might be reluctant to sweeten the offer they made Manny Ramirez. "There's nothing that's gotten better in the economy since that time," McCourt said. "You can interpret that how you like." McCourt also said that the ball is "100 percent" in Manny's court at this point in the negotiations. "We made what I consider an aggressive offer, particularly in light of the economy," McCourt said. "We were hoping to get something done quickly. That didn't happen. We'll continue to make decisions in the best interest of the club, both short-term and long-term."

Bowa: Dodgers Need Manny

Nov 24, 2008 4:41 PM

Dodgers' third base coach Larry Bowa believes that the team needs to re-sign free-agent outfielder Manny Ramirez. "Of course, the length of the contract, the money, that will be the biggest determination as to whether Manny comes back here," Bowa said. "I think we all hope it works out." Bowa, however, knows the pitfalls of signing Ramirez to a long-term deal. "There are pros and cons," added Bowa. "If he gets four years and is playing left field, I don't know if he can do it. He might, but for that length, is the American League a better fit because of the DH? "I know what I saw after he got here. He was going first to third and running hard and hustling. He made a great impression on our young kids. He was a leader in the clubhouse. "To be honest, when I first heard we were going to trade for him, I said, 'Oh, OK, this ought to be fun.' I had seen it from the other side when Joe [Torre] and I were in New York. I saw Manny being Manny and it upset me."

Nov 24, 2008 10:20 AM

Free-agent shortstop Rafael Furcal told El Caribe that he would return from his native Dominican Republic to the United States on Monday to sign a contract. From what he said, Dylan Hernandez of the Los Angeles Times believes that deal could be with the Athletics. Furcal revealed that he has been offered a four-year, $48-million contract by the A's, and that the Mets have contacted him about moving to second base as well. "The offers made by the Athletics and the Mets of New York are tempting, but we'll make a decision after I meet with my lawyer because there are various factors that we have to evaluate," he said. "But my general feeling is that every offer that's been made is important, which is why we want to make a decision that?s well thought out."

Ethier: Manny Taught Me How To Be Patient

Nov 23, 2008 2:54 PM

Andre Ethier credits Manny Ramirez for having a positive influence on his play at the plate. "There's no doubt that what I got from Manny was learning patience at the plate," said Ethier. He taught me to just focus on every at-bat and to really stay back and not be too jumpy. He really taught me to relax and just let my natural talents come out. He's just the greatest hitter, and the way he prepares in the cage, it's amazing to watch him. I think it really helped to hit in front of him, and I think my confidence at the plate grew and I started hitting better."
