Orioles Sign No. 1 Pick Adley Rutschman To Record Bonus

Jun 25, 2019 7:53 AM

The Baltimore Orioles have signed the first overall pick in this year's draft, Oregon State catcher Adley Rutschman, to a record bonus.

The deal is worth $8.1 million, according to reports. Gerrit Cole received an $8 million bonus from the Pittsburgh Pirates as the top pick in 2011.

Rutschman, 21, hit .411 with 17 home runs as a junior this year.

The team plans to introduce Rutschman to the crowd at Camden Yards on Tuesday during a game against the San Diego Padres.

Orioles May Not Play Top Pick Adley Rutschman At Catcher

Jun 10, 2019 8:24 AM

The Baltimore Orioles haven't yet signed top pick Adley Rutschman, but they are expected to before long.

Mike Elias has indicated the club could play Rutschman at positions other than catcher when he makes his professional debut later this summer.

"I'm going to have to sit down and talk to him and see how he wants to approach this summer," Elias said. "For us, from a developmental standpoint, the at-bats are going to be more important. His receiving is so polished that I don't see us doing a lot of work on that. By the end of the year, it became so apparent to us that this was a really special bat, a really special hitter. If he meets expectations offensively, it may be a discussion of how to pace him from a physical standpoint."
