Orioles Could Make Run At Teixeira, Burnett
The Orioles could make a play for expected free agents Mark Teixeira and A.J. Burnett this winter. Teixeira grew up just outside of Baltimore, and Burnett lives close to the city during the offseason. "I think we would be remiss if we don't look into what might be unique opportunities in the case of geographic ties to the area," said Andy MacPhail, who did not name names. "I think we owe it to our fans to explore that. Again, I don't know how realistic it would be, but I think we'd be remiss in not exploring it."
O's To Talk Extensions With Roberts, Markakis
The Orioles are preparing to talk about contract extensions with both Brian Roberts and Nick Markakis, according to Baltimore Sun. President ofBbaseball Operations Andy MacPhail claims he will explore extension talks with the agents of both Roberts and Markakis in the coming weeks. "It would be difficult for me envisioning an offseason where we don't explore and see what their appetite [for a contract extension] is given that he is coming into his final season next year," MacPhail said. "I would expect that we have a conversation. Where it's going to go? I don't know. But I would expect that we would have a conversation about it."
Pettitte Will Close Yankee Stadium
Andy Pettitte will start for the Yankees on Sept. 21 against the Orioles in the final regular season game held at Yankee Stadium, according to New York Daily News. "It'll be an emotional night for me, for sure, being able to make that last start here," Pettitte said Friday. "It's wonderful, and I'm glad I'm going to have the opportunity." Manager Joe Girardi said the decision to start Pettitte "seems fitting."
Millar Wants To Return To Orioles
Veteran first baseman Kevin Millar would prefer to return to the Orioles next season, according to Baltimore Sun. He has been with the team since 2006, and will become a free agent this winter. "Truthfully speaking, I want to be here," Millar said. "I feel like everything is going in the right direction." "I enjoy the tough times when you are rebuilding, revamping," he added. "I enjoy those times because when you see a team turn the corner, it is pretty neat."
Trembley Will Return To Orioles In 2009
The Orioles have exercised an option in Manager Dave Trembley's contract that will allow him to remain in Baltimore, according to Associated Press. The club also added a team option for 2010. Trembley has a 103-129 record as the team's manager.
Ex-Orioles' Infielder Todd Cruz Dead At 52
Former Orioles' infielder Todd Cruz, 52, died on Tuesday while swimming at his apartment complex, according to Baltimore Sun. Cruz was a part of the Orioles' 1983 World Series championship team. "Being with these guys here is like being a little kid ... getting ready for Christmas," said Cruz, just six weeks ago at the 25th anniversary celebration of the championship. "I love them all, and I'll be an Oriole for the rest of my life."
