Orioles Revisit Pie Talks With Cubs?
The Orioles have reportedly revisited trade talks with the Cubs about outfielder Felix Pie, and could end up as the third team in a deal that would send Jake Peavy to Chicago. Baltimore targeted Pie at this time last year, when a deal involving second baseman Brian Roberts was discussed. Orioles president Andy MacPhail said yesterday that a deal is not imminent, but acknowledged that Pie is the kind of player the team is pursuing. "We have a lot of different irons in the fire," MacPhail said. "We're in the process of determining who our trading partners might be and which free agents we might have a chance to sign. We're basically in the same position as everybody else, waiting for a couple of big dominoes to fall."
Local Players Unlike To Land In Baltimore?
The Orioles haven't had a winning season since 1997, but are looking to sign Mark Teixeira and/or A.J. Burnett, who both have ties to the Baltimore area. Team president Andy MacPhail hasn't been shy about his desire to sign the hot free-agents, but knows his chances of landing them are slim. "Even given our circumstances, I think we would be remiss if we didn?t explore the possibilities," MacPhail said. "I think we owe it to our fans to at least talk to them and try to get a feeling for how important it is for them to pitch or play close to home."
Orioles Discuss Extension With Markakis
The Orioles have had discussions with outfielder Nick Markakis about a contract extension. Markakis' agent Jamie Murphy said he has had "active talks" with team president Andy MacPhail as recently as Monday. He is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason and cannot be a free agent until 2011.
Orioles Join Chase For Burnett
The Orioles have joined five other teams in the race to sign free-agent pitcher A.J. Burnett this offseason. "There is sincere and mutual interest (with the Orioles)," agent Darek Braunecker said. "We're not here to waste people's time or our time. We don't need to create a false market for A.J. Burnett." Also in the hunt are the Phillies, Braves, Red Sox, Yankees and Blue Jays.
Orioles Looking At Izturis
The Orioles have talked to the representative for free agent Cesar Izturis as they look to fill their vacancy at shortstop. Izturis, 28, hit .263 last season with one homer and 24 RBIs in 135 games for the Cardinals. Baltimore president Andy MacPhail wouldn't comment on specific options although he again reiterated that finding a shortstop is one of his offseason priorities.
Hennessey, Murphy Sign Minor-League Deals With Orioles
The Orioles signed righthander Brad Hennessey and infielder Donnie Murphy to minor league contracts for the 2009 season on Monday, as reported by Yahoo.com. Terms of the deals were not disclosed.
Furcal Getting Interest From Royals And Orioles
The Dodgers are offering Rafael Furcal a two-year contract for about $25 to 30 million, according to a person familiar with their thinking. However, a source close to Furcal said "they know that isn't going to fly." Furcal is said to have interest from "eight to 10" teams after hitting .357 in an injury-shortened 2008 season. The Orioles and Royals are believed to be two of the other teams involved.
