Nationals Place Bergmann On 15-Day DL
The Nationals' pitching staff took another hit Friday, when Jason Bergmann was placed on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation. Bergmann, who was slated to start Saturday's interleague game against the Orioles, joins six other pitchers on the Nationals' DL. He is expected to miss two starts.
Orioles' Payton, Mora Nearly Come To Blows
Another late-inning loss led to a testy exchange between Orioles teammates on Monday night. Jay Payton and Melvin Mora traded angry words and nearly came to blows as they left the field following a 5-3 loss to the Blue Jays. Payton, who grounded out to end the game, apparently was upset with Mora for distracting him as Mora took third base on defensive indifference with two out in the ninth. Payton took a called strike on the pitch, leaving him trailing 1-2 in the count to Jeremy Accardo. "It was my fault because I went over there," Mora said. "Maybe his eyes were blinking because I was running."
Blue Jays Designate Smith For Assignment, RHP Litsch To Make Debut
The Blue Jays designated Jason Smith for assignment after the game against the Orioles on Monday night, freeing up a roster spot for rookie right-hander Jesse Litsch. Litsch will make his major league debut Tuesday in place of Roy Halladay, who is on the 15-day disabled list following an appendectomy last week. Litsch was 3-4 with a 5.06 ERA for Double-A New Hampshire.
Beckett Leaves With Finger Injury
Josh Beckett entered Sunday's game looking for his eighth win against no losses. Down by a score of 2-0 after pitching four innings, Beckett was removed because of a torn flap of skin on his right middle finger. The Red Sox rallied from a 5-0 deficit in their last turn at bat in the bottom of the 9th inning to beat the Orioles 6-5.
Jaret Wright Could Be Done
The father of former Indians' No. 1 pick Jaret Wright said that his son may be forced to retire because of a shoulder problem. Wright, who is now with the Baltimore Orioles, left an April 29 start after three innings and immediately returned to the disabled list.
