Shelby Miller Plays Left Field For Diamondbacks

Apr 25, 2016 8:55 AM

Shelby Miller played left field for the Arizona Diamondbacks late as they battled the Pittsburgh Pirates in a 13-inning game on Sunday.

The Diamondbacks used Zack Greinke as a pinch hitter in the 12th inning and he lined a single during the club's rally. He was replaced by Miller, who scored a run as a pinch runner. Miller had to stay in the game after Nick Ahmed was ejected for arguing a called third strike.

Miller became the first Diamondbacks pitcher to play a position and the first Major Leaguer to do so since Jason Gurka played right field for the Colorado Rockies on Sept. 15.

Odd Mechanical Flaw Leading To Shelby Miller's Struggles

Apr 22, 2016 2:46 PM

Shelby Miller has struggled mightily in his first four starts with the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Arizona traded a haul of young players to Atlanta for Miller this offseason. He has responded with a 8.59 ERA, 10 strikeouts and 11 walks in 14.2 innings.

Miller has had issues with his mechanics, specifically with his follow through, which has led to him hitting his pitching hand on the ground after releasing the pitch. He left his previous start with cuts on his hand and on Thursday the same thing happened.

Chip Hale said he'd never seen anything like it, not for a pitcher with an over-the-top delivery.

"He's staying more upright," Hale said. "It's just something he's been working on and he was doing a really good job of that in his pen."

Chip Hale 'Embarrassed' After Loss To Cubs

Apr 8, 2016 4:44 PM

The Arizona Diamondbacks have struggled to begin the season, including a 14-6 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Thursday night.

The Diamondbacks gave up 14 hits, walked 10 batters and made a series of defensive miscues.

"For me as manager and our coaching staff, it was embarrassing. That is the easiest way to put it," manager Chip Hale said. "We made some gaffes on defense that we worked so hard in spring training and we are close enough to spring training where we shouldn't make those mistakes."

The Arizona Diamondbacks haven't ruled out acquiring a center fielder to replace A.J. Pollock, according to a report.

Pollock will have surgery on his fractured elbow and there is no guarantee that he'll return this season.
