Mariners Acquire Jean Segura From Diamondbacks For Taijuan Walker

Nov 28, 2016 7:51 AM

The Seattle Mariners have acquired Jean Segura from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for Taijuan Walker.

Seattle also received outfielder Mitch Haniger and left-hander Zac Curtis, while Arizona landed shortstop Ketel Marte.

"Segura was one of the premier offensive players in the majors last season," Jerry Dipoto said. "His combination of average, power and speed is extremely difficult to find, especially at a position like shortstop and at the top of our lineup.

"We believe pairing him with Robinson Cano gives us tremendous offensive potential in the middle of our infield."

Diamondbacks Expect To Have Payroll In $100M Range

Nov 14, 2016 7:30 AM

The Arizona Diamondbacks expect to operate with a payroll in the $100 million range, which wouldn't give them much wiggle room to improve the roster this offseason.

They only have four players under contract currently -- Zack Greinke, Paul Goldschmidt, A.J. Pollock and Yasmany Tomas. The four will make around $60 million in total salary. However, a host of arbitration players are projected to make around $30 million.

Report: Curt Schilling Faked Wanting To Stay In Game 4 Of World Series

Nov 2, 2016 4:14 PM

Curt Schilling faked his pleas to stay in his Game 4 start in the 2001 World Series, according to his former catcher Damian Miller.

“Whatever happens, this is my last inning. Don’t let him put me back out there again,” Schilling told Miller, according to Joe Buck’s new book, “Lucky Bastard,” which will be released Nov. 15.

According to the book, obtained by Vice Sports, Miller passed the message on to manager Bob Brenly, who Schilling knew had a microphone attached to his uniform.

“He knew he would look better if he begged to keep pitching on national television,” Buck wrote. “So he asked Brenly to keep him in the game. … They both knew he was coming out.”

The Fox broadcast ran a clip of Schilling pleading to stay in the game.

“No no no,” Schilling, who was pitching on three days rest, said when told he would be lifted.

“We’ve got BK [Byung-Hyun Kim] locked and loaded for the last six outs,” Brenly told him.
