Diamondbacks, Rockies To Interview Don Wakamatsu

Don Wakamatsu will interview with the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies for their vacant managerial positions.

Wakamatsu is currently the bench coach for the Kansas City Royals.

The 53-year-old managed the Seattle Mariners for just under two seasons as he was fired in August 2010. Since then he has worked for the Toronto Blue Jays and New York Yankees.

Sawdaye, who follows Hazen to Arizona from Boston, will also have the title of senior vice president.

He was also under consideration to be named GM of the Red Sox and had been linked to the Minnesota Twins as well.

Sawdaye is also being courted by the Minnesota Twins.

Mike Hazen: Goal In Arizona Is To Win Championship

Mike Hazen jumped at the chance to take over the lead in baseball operations with the Arizona Diamondbacks despite working as the general manager of his hometown Boston Red Sox.

Hazen will have the final say with the Diamondbacks, something he never had with the Red Sox.

"There are some great players here, and my job is to help bring this franchise to the next level," Hazen said. "It's an enormous responsibility and we're here to make a commitment to the fans. First and foremost, we're here to win a championship."

The Diamondbacks were searching for someone with a blend of traditional baseball evaluation skills and analytics after firing Dave Stewart a day after the season ended.

The Arizona Diamondbacks tapped into the Boston Red Sox organization for their new executive vice president and general manager, naming Mike Hazen to replace Dave Stewart.

"We feel very strongly that we have found the ideal candidate to lead our baseball operations," Arizona managing general partner Ken Kendrick said in a statement. "Mike's reputation throughout the game is impeccable, and his championship experience gives us great confidence in naming him to this position."

Hazen, 40, had been serving as general manager of the Red Sox, but president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski has the final say on baseball decisions. As executive vice president and general manager of the Diamondbacks, Hazen will have the authority.
