Gibson Searching For Ways To Keep D-Backs Hungry
Diamondbacks manager Kirk Gibson has spent the winter figuring out ways to keep his team hungry. "It's certainly something I put a lot of thought into," Gibson said. "You guys know me -- I constantly shake myself to remain humble. Success is hard to deal with. We've talked about it. I'm not worried about it, but yet I'm alert about it. It could damage our chances if we can't remain humble." One of the things Gibson will do is continue to emphasize the fundamentals, believing that all the work that was put in last spring only scratched the surface. Arizona entered the 2011 season as long-shots, but won the National League West title.
Source: Orioles Interested In Saunders
The Orioles have had multiple conversations with left-hander Joe Saunders, according to a baseball source. Saunders, 30, was 12-13 with a 3.69 ERA in 212 innings last year with the Diamondbacks, who did not tender him a contract this offseason. He would have been in his final year of arbitration this offseason but now is a free agent and has been linked to several teams -- with varying degrees of interest -- including the Marlins, Red Sox, Rockies, Reds and Tigers.
Arizona Used Pitching Money On Kubel
The Diamondbacks had allocated money to sign a starting pitcher like Joe Saunders or Hiroki Kuroda, but they instead decided to use it to add a bat. Arizona agreed to a two-year deal with outfielder Jason Kubel on Monday.
Reports: D-Backs To Sign Jason Kubel
The Diamondbacks have agreed to a two-year, $15 million deal with outfielder Jason Kubel, according to numerous reports. Kubel hit .273 with 12 home runs and 58 RBIs last season for the Twins. He will play left field for the defending National League West champion Diamondbacks, according to the reports.
D-Backs Sign Takashi Saito
The Diamondbacks have reached agreement on a one-year, $1.75M contract with 41-year-old right-hander Takashi Saito. Saito went 4-2 with a 2.03 ERA in 30 relief appearances for the NL Central-champion Brewers last season.
D-Backs Obtain Cahill, Breslow From A's
The D-Backs added a front-line starter Friday and boosted their bullpen, acquiring pitchers Trevor Cahill, Craig Breslow and cash from the A's. The A's received starting pitcher Jarrod Parker, outfielder Collin Cowgill and reliever Ryan Cook in the trade Friday, all players the A's envision could be on the major league roster in 2012.
D-Backs, Overbay Agree To Deal
The Diamondbacks have reached an agreement with Lyle Overbay on a one-year, $1 million deal. Overbay split time between Pittsburgh and Arizona in 2011, hitting .234 with nine home runs and 47 RBI.
