The Kansas City Royals have signed infielder/outfielder Ross Gload to a two-year contract with a club option for 2010. The Royals also announced that catcher John Buck and left-handed pitcher Jorge De La Rosa signed one-year contracts for the 2008 season. In addition, right-handed pitcher Brian Lawrence was signed to a 2008 minor league contract with an invitation to Royals Major League Spring Training in Surprise, Ariz. Gload, 31, spent his first season with the Royals in 2007, hitting .288 and setting new career highs with 92 hits, 22 doubles, 51 RBI, and 37 runs scored. The left-handed hitter from East Hampton, N.Y., hit .329 with runners in scoring position, .361 with runners in scoring position and two outs, and .388 against left-handed pitchers. Gload appeared in 89 games at first base and eight more in left field for Kansas City. Buck, 27, is coming off the best power season of his four-year Major League career, leading the Royals with 18 home runs. The right-handed hitter also set new career bests in runs scored, walks, on-base percentage, and slugging percentage. Royals' pitchers posted a 4.40 ERA while he was catching, the sixth-best mark among A.L. backstops. De La Rosa, 26, went 8-12 with a 5.82 ERA in 26 appearances, including 23 starts, in 2007. The left-hander from Nuevo Leon, Mexico, set new career highs in starts, wins, innings pitched, and strikeouts last season, opening the year as KC?s number four starter. Lawrence, 31, spent a majority of the 2007 season in the New York Mets' organization, splitting his time between New Orleans (AAA) and the Mets after opening the year making three starts for Colorado Springs in the Rockies system. He was 1-2 with the Mets, posting a 6.83 ERA in six starts. The 6-foot right-hander began his career with the San Diego Padres, debuting in 2001 and winning a combined 37 games between 2002 and 2004. The native of Fort Collins, Colo., missed the entire 2006 season with a torn labrum and rotator cuff in his right shoulder. The signings of Gload, Buck, and De La Rosa bring the number of arbitration-eligible players to three: infielder Esteban German, pitcher Zack Greinke, and outfielder Mark Teahen. The addition of Lawrence brings the number of non-roster invitees to the Royals Spring camp to 19.
