The Pirates avoided salary arbitration with Jose Bautista on Thursday by signing the third baseman to a one-year, $1.8 million contract. Bautista's deal includes incentive clauses that will pay him $35,000 for playing in 145 games or making 615 plate appearances and $65,000 for 152 games or 640 plate appearances. Bautista, 27, made $397,500 last season when he played in 142 games and made 604 plate appearances, both career highs. He batted .254 with 15 homers and a career-best 63 RBI.
