Devil Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg is in town this weekend for mostly celebratory purposes, from top draft pick David Price's arrival Friday to Monday's groundbreaking for the team's new spring training complex in Port Charlotte. As pleased as Sternberg was about both of those events, though, he didn't shy away from a wide-ranging critique of the on-field results. The Rays entered play Friday with a 46-74 record, giving them seven more losses than any other American League team. Their 26-game deficit behind first-place Boston was 8 1/2 games larger than that of any other last-place team in the majors. "On the whole, the wins and losses have been unacceptable," said Sternberg, who used the final word more than once during the course of an interview. As he did in remarks just after the All-Star break at Yankee Stadium, Sternberg said the blame for the Rays' failures fell throughout the organization, from himself on down to the team's support staff.
