The Mets optioned the 0-5 Mike Pelfrey to Triple-A New Orleans and called up highly touted outfield prospect Carlos Gomez. Since Moises Alou is bothered by a strained quadriceps muscle, the 21-year-old Gomez is making his major-league debut in left field Sunday. Gomez picked up a double in his first at-bat ever in the majors. Alou, who had an MRI on Saturday, is listed as day to day. The Mets will have to make a move by Thursday afternoon when the team will need a starter to take Pelfrey's spot in the rotation. Manager Willie Randolph indicated that Jason Vargas, who is 2-3 with a 5.30 ERA for New Orleans, is a candidate to make that start.
