The agent for Padres catcher Ramon Hernandez said yesterday Hernandez "absolutely" needs surgery on his left wrist and that he will seek a second opinion tomorrow on a contrast MRI that was done by the club yesterday. "It's just a question of how long he would be out," said agent Eric Goldschmidt. "It's been sore, and Ramon says it's getting a little Padres trainer Todd Hutcheson said the MRI, more detailed than Hernandez's first one, should help the club determine if and when Hernandez needs surgery. He said the club welcomes the decision to get a second opinion from Norman Zemel, a hand specialist in Los Angeles. "We told Ramon: Let's get all of the information. Then you can make an educated decision based on the information," Hutcheson said.
