A boy was struck in the head by a broken bat during Wednesday night's game at Yankee Stadium.

With no outs in the seventh inning, Chris Carter's bat shattered. The ball hopped in the infield and most of the bat struck the child. The boy was sitting about seven rows back on the third-base side, behind the Kansas City Royals' dugout.

Fans waved for assistance and play was delayed for about two minutes as players looked into the stands.

Medical personnel carried out the boy, who appeared to have a brace on one of his legs. New York Yankees spokesman Jason Zillo said the fan was given first aid at the ballpark and was receiving medical attention elsewhere after the game.

"You never want to have something like that happen to a kid or anyone in general," Carter said. "I guess the good side of it is the square part of the bat didn't pierce him or anything like that. So I hope he's OK."
