The San Diego Padres are carrying an Opening Day payroll of $68 million, nearly half of which will go to players no longer on the team.

The payroll is the club's lowest since they opened with a $55 million payroll in 2012.

San Diego decided to eat a significant amount of cash when trading veterans James Shields, Matt Kemp, Melvin Upton, Jr., Andrew Cashner and Hector Olivera, who was released after being swapped for Kemp. They will pay those players a total of $31.5 million in 2017.
