The Toronto Blue Jays have released Melvin Upton, Jr., who it was reported on Saturday would not make the team's Opening Day roster.

Toronto had been working to trade Upton, who they acquired from the San Diego Padres last summer.

Upton, 32, hit .196/.261/.318 in 165 plate appearances with the Blue Jays.
