The Texas Rangers are planning to watch Josh Hamilton work out before Christmas.

If he looks good, the Rangers will consider signing Hamilton to a minor league contract.

Hamilton was released by the Rangers in late August in a procedural move.

He still has one year remaining on the five-year, $125 million contract he signed prior to the 2013 season (the Los Angeles Angels are on the hook for nearly all of his 2017 salary). If Texas had waited to release him until after the season and then re-signed him to a minor league deal, Hamilton would've been ineligible to play in the major leagues with Texas until May 15 of next year.
