The St. Louis Cardinals set a Major League record on Tuesday night with their 15th pinch-hit home run of the season.

Down to their last strike, Matt Carpenter hit a solo home run off of Pittsburgh Pirates reliever Tony Watson to tie the game at 6-6. The Cardinals homered two more times later in the inning as they went on to win 9-7.

"A lot of work goes into being ready for those pinch-hit at-bats and we take a lot of pride in it," Mike Matheny said.

The Cardinals went into Tuesday leading the National League with 196 home runs.

The previous record of 14 pinch-hit home runs was held jointly by the 2001 San Francisco Giants and the 2001 Arizona Diamondbacks.
