The Boston Red Sox have announced that Pablo Sandoval will undergo surgery on his left shoulder this week after the third baseman received a second opinion from Dr. James Andrews in Pensacola, Florida.

Sandoval is expected to miss the remainder of the 2016 season, according to a source.

The Red Sox haven't confirmed the timetable.

"We will have a more definitive explanation after the surgery," Dave Dombrowski said via text message when asked about the diagnosis.
