The Boston Red Sox have placed Pablo Sandoval on the disabled list with a left shoulder strain.

"To give you an exact moment when it took place, I don't have that, to be honest," John Farrell said. "He's been hitting a lot extra before [batting practice] and during the game in the cage."

There is significant mystery surrounding the injury given Sandoval's tumultuous start to the season.

Sandoval, who lost his starting job at third base to Travis Shaw in spring training, explained only that he woke up Wednesday with soreness.
