Alex Rodriguez will retire when his current deal with the New York Yankees expires after the 2017 season, according to ESPN's Andrew Marchand.

Rodriguez had a productive 2015 after missing the entire 2014 season due to a suspension, finishing with an OPS of .842 with 33 homers in 620 plate appearances.

Rodriguez has won the AL MVP in 2003, 2005 and 2007.

The New York Yankees traded for Rodriguez before the 2004 offseason and was moved from shortstop to third base due to the presence of Derek Jeter. Rodriguez had left the Seattle Mariners for the Texas Rangers after the 2000 season, signing a historic 10-year, $252 million deal.

Rodriguez's contract had an opt-out clause, which he exercised to become a free agent after the 2007 season. Rodriguez and the Yankees agreed upon a new 10-year, $275 million deal that contained several bonuses for home run milestones.

In 2009, news broke that Rodriguez had tested positive for several performance enhancing drugs. Rodriguez was later involved with the Biogenesis scandal, which led to his 2014 suspension.
