The Arizona Diamondbacks, who will officially announce Zack Greinke and his $206 million contract on Monday, didn't even enter the running to sign the right-hander until Friday morning.

The front office then completed the deal in less than 12 hours.

Dave Stewart had only mentioned Greinke in passing when owner Ken Kendrick called and president Derrick Hall said: "Let's go for it."

Kendrick paid $238 million for the Diamondbacks in 2004, just $24 million more than the value of Greinke's six-year deal.
