The Athletics hired Bob Schaefer as bench coach Wednesday to work under first-year manager Bob Geren. Next season will be Schaefer's ninth on a major league coaching staff and sixth as a bench coach after he worked as the Royals' bench coach in 1991 and again from 2002-05.
