Sandy Alderson has come out in defense of Matt Harvey, who has taken a lot of criticism for plans to limit his innings as the New York Mets race towards the postseason.

The Mets GM held a conference call with agent Scott Boras and Dr. James Andrews last week to determine the best course of action for Harvey, who is still rounding into form following Tommy John surgery.

The trio, together, decided on the current plan of abbreviated starts as the regular season winds down to keep Harvey's innings in a "reasonable" range.

Alderson says Harvey wasn't a part of the conversation and that Andrews never demanded a hard cap of 180 innings, which Boras has publicly claimed.

"At this point, it's not about Matt not wanting to do this or that -- it's a question of what we think is appropriate," Alderson said. "I think it's unfair to put all of this -- or any of this -- on Matt at this point."

Harvey's workload sits at 176 2/3 innings in his first season back from Tommy John surgery, less than two full innings shy of his previous career high.
