Terry Collins believes the New York Mets have a bright future with their young starters, but isn't sure if he'll be around to experience it.

"That's a good question. I don't have an answer for it," Collins said when asked about his future.

His contract as manager is set to expire after this season.

"I have no idea," Collins said when asked if he thought an extension would be discussed during the season. "I'm telling you, I don't think about it. I think about playing golf in November. That's the only thing on my mind right now."

The Mets entered the week in first place, 4.5 games ahead of the Washington Nationals in the National League East.

When the extension question was put to the club's hierarchy, a team spokesman said, "We'll address it at the proper time."
