Zack Wheeler elaborated in an interview with Newsday why he decided to call Sandy Alderson last week and ask the New York Mets not to trade him.

"I told him I know it's a business and he has a job to do, but I'd really like to be here because of what's about to happen," Wheeler said. "I've been here a couple of years and want to see it through."

Ultimately the deal fell apart, but New York nearly sent Wheeler and Wilmer Flores to the Milwaukee Brewers for Carlos Gomez.

Wheeler spoke about why he made the call. "I know that doesn't happen every day and I was nervous about doing it," he said. "But I figured it was the best way to get it across that I wanted to stay and be a part of this team's winning future."

Alderson said the conversation "actually had quite an impact." In all of his years in baseball, he said he had never seen a player in Wheeler's position take the unusual step of calling.

"Again, if you go back to Wednesday and even this conversation, we're talking about human beings," Alderson said. "We all develop an attachment to each other and whatever capacity we serve, so it's hard."
