It may not initially make sense, but trading Yoenis Cespedes would make it easier for the Detroit Tigers to re-sign the slugger this winter

If the Tigers keep Cespedes past the trade deadline, a unique clause in his contract effectively will close the team's negotiating window with him five days after the World Series is over.

When Cespedes signed a a four-year, $36 million contract with the Oakland Athletics after leaving Cuba in Feb. 2012, his agent used leverage to gain the right for him to be released at the end of his deal. Cespedes, then represented by Adam Katz of the Wasserman Sports Group, is now under Roc Nation.

A team cannot extend a qualifying offer to a released player under the collective-bargaining agreement. Nor can it re-sign him as a free agent until after May 15 of the following year.
