Justin Masterson's role with the Boston Red Sox isn't guaranteed. He wants to start and isn't sure if he's ready to overhaul his approach to come out of the bullpen.

Masterson is signed to a one-year, $9.5 million deal.

"Still trying to work through it, talk, see what they truly want, what I truly want," he said. "It's one of those where I think what I'd ultimately like to do, and what would be great for all, is to go start, but guys have been doing great and that's understandable that that's not open at this point in time."

If the Red Sox can find a team that is willing to take a chance on him before the July 31 non-waiver deadline, a trade may be an option.

"I don't know if it's in my nature to do that, to say, 'Beat it guys, trade me or put me in [the rotation],'" he said. "No, I don't think that's the time right now. Especially the way I see this team going and the way I believe in this team too.

"I'd like to be a part of it in some way shape or form. You can never have too much pitching, especially starting. So if I could be that avenue of guys coming in where maybe guys need a break, or something were to take place, that might be it. Those are the thoughts bouncing through my head as we talk about it. And we have a few days to work through it and see what exactly needs to be done.

"In the end I feel great, so that's the thing for me personally, I feel good and we'll figure something out."
