Joe Girardi was thankful that the Miami Marlins finally got a hit off Michael Pineda on Wednesday night, saving him from having to make a tough decision.

The Yankees recently gave Pineda a break, which included his skipping a start, so the pitcher had 11 days off. They did it because they wanted to protect Pineda's right arm, which had shoulder surgery in 2012 and has never endured 200 innings pitched in a season.

Pineda fired six no-hit innings, but needed 82 pitches to do so. There was no way that Girardi was going to let him finish the game, if he got past the 110-pitch mark.

"I never had to get to that point, thank goodness," Girardi said.

Pineda got two more outs in the seventh. He finished the night after going 6 2/3 innings, allowing just the home run, while striking out nine and walking two. He threw 100 pitches.
