Bernie Williams, who hasn't played since Oct. 1, 2006, will officially sign his retirement papers in a news conference at Yankee Stadium before the New York Yankees take on the New York Mets on Friday night.

The Yankees will honor Williams by retiring his No. 51 and unveiling a plaque in Monument Park on May 24.

The decision to formally sign his retirement papers avoids the awkward situation of the Yankees honoring a player that is technically still active.

Following the news conference on Friday, Williams will throw out the first pitch before the game with the Mets.
